I’ve noticed a trend in the past four months. YouTube has started to suck. Quality content has been pushed aside by what I like to call Tag Spammers. Put bluntly: People who tag their bad videos with terms that have no relevance, all in the hope to play the system. The sad reality: It works, because YouTube is flawed.
In the first 24 hours of a video’s life, if it gets enough views to make it to the top of an individual category on YouTube, the “YouTube Spiral” begins. I’ll talk more about this later in my rant.
Most people click on videos based off their center-cards. Partner accounts on YouTube have the ability to change their centercards while normal accounts can’t. (It used to be a frame of the video from either the 25%, 50%, and 75% mark on the video’s timeline) Why does this matter? Because most people don’t read. They judge a book by it’s cover.
With the ability to change center cards, certain content producers abuse their power, some going as far as throwing a photo of a girl’s chest or blood & guts - sometimes both. It gets views, I can’t blame them - I’ve been guilty of that with certain cars on FastLaneDaily, but its wrong.
The internet is a very POWERFUL tool. We need to have a set of social and ethical standards we all adhere to. If we don’t, the tool that has made all of our lives so great the past decade, will soon turn into nothing but a massive spam bot. YouTube has failed me, big time. They haven’t taken the right steps to fix problems with abuse of tags/centercards and in the end, it hurts people who produce good quality content.
Back to the “YouTube Spiral”. You could essentially just call this any viral videos. Humans like to see suffering. I know how bad that may sound, but why cant any of us resist the urge to look at a bad car accident? The same can be said with watching videos online.
“Wait, this video has 10,000,000 views? I guess I should watch it too!”
Before you know it, that video has 20,000,000 views.
We suck…. YouTube/Google has some things to fix. In the meantime, enjoy today’s Fast Lane Daily. Lil Wayne makes an appearance!
